Concrete canoe nationals returns to UW-Madison

Badger engineers will paddle on familiar waters in the summer of 2020.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison will host the 2020 American Society of Civil Engineers National Concrete Canoe Competition June 13-15.

The competition, which dates to 1988, gives civil engineering students an active, tangible project to manage and the chance to design concrete mixes and build leadership skills.

Teams earn points for design papers, oral presentations, final products and races in the water. UW-Madison placed seventh at the 2019 national finals in June in Melbourne, Florida, and won five consecutive national titles from 2003-07.

UW-Madison has previously hosted the event twice, in 1996 and 2002.
