Michael Corradini
The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s Advisory Committee on Reactor Safeguards (ACRS) has elected Wisconsin Distinguished Professor Emeritus of nuclear engineering and engineering physics Michael Corradini as chair. The ACRS, a group of experienced technical experts, advises the commission, independently from the NRC staff, on safety issues related to the licensing and operation of nuclear power plants as well as issues of health physics and radiation protection.
Corradini, one of the nation’s foremost experts in nuclear reactor safety, has more than 30 years of research experience in the areas of multi-phase fluid mechanics and heat transfer, nuclear reactor safety, severe accidents, reactor operation, energy policy and nuclear waste disposal. He has extensive research experience in phenomenology beyond the design basis accidents in light-water reactors, including molten fuel coolant interactions, molten core-concrete interactions, hydrogen generation and containment response.
Corradini has served on various advisory committees, received numerous awards, and authored two book chapters and one book (on multi-phase flow) and more than 200 technical papers. He was a consultant to the ACRS from 1982 to 1997, and during this time he advised the committee on many technical issues associated with severe accident progression, source term, containment performance, and development of severe accident policy statement.
Corradini is a fellow of the American Nuclear Society and a member of the National Academy of Engineering. In 2002 and 2003, he served as chairman of the Nuclear Waste Technical Review Board. In 2006, he was appointed to the scientific advisory board to the French Civilian Atomic Energy Agency. Since 1991, he has also served as director of the Wisconsin Institute of Nuclear Systems.
