July 8, 2026 Engineering the future Written By: Devesh Ranjan Categories: Ranjan's Reflections For me, engineering has always been about possibility—about asking what could be—and then having the courage, creativity and commitment to build toward that future. That’s exactly what we are doing in our college of engineering: We’re imagining what’s next, and then we are making it not only real, but impactful. It’s the same approach that has shaped generations of College of Engineering students, staff, faculty and alumni. It has driven discovery, powered industries and improved lives in Wisconsin and around the world. Now, we’ve begun our next chapter. We are living through a time of extraordinary transformation. Tools like artificial intelligence, for example, are simultaneously advancing and redefining how we learn, work and create. The challenges facing our world today are more complex, more interconnected and more urgent. At a time when people are questioning the value of universities and of higher education, we have an opportunity to think boldly, to aim higher—and to ensure that the engineers we educate, the discoveries we pursue and the partnerships we build are equal to this moment. Our strategic framework is grounded in a simple concept: Engineering is the glue that brings people and ideas together for the greatest good. We must be more integrated, more human-centered and more connected to the world than ever before: We’re building our future through collaboration across disciplines, sectors and communities. We are translating this vision into action. We’re rethinking how we educate—not just to prepare students for their first job, but to prepare them for a lifetime of learning, leadership and impact. We’re advancing discovery in ways that do not end at publication or patenting—but continue along the path to societal benefit through entrepreneurship, partnerships, translation and real application. And, importantly, we are making ongoing investments in our students, staff and faculty—because breakthrough ideas and lasting impact begin with people who feel valued, supported, challenged and inspired. At its core, this work is designed to prompt movement: from classroom to application, from discovery to transformation, and from individual excellence to collective impact. And in that spirit, we’ll embed innovation and entrepreneurship in how we think, how we teach and how we solve problems—so that our college contributes meaningfully to economic vitality, community well-being and to the broader public good. As we have for more than 175 years, we’ll do all of this with intention, guided by our values, grounded in our mission and aligned with our Wisconsin Idea. Of course, we will measure our progress in metrics and milestones. But we’ll also define success through the engineers we educate—people who graduate not only with technical expertise, but with judgment, curiosity, resilience and a deep sense of responsibility. We’ll look at whether our discoveries translate into meaningful progress in people’s lives. And we’ll count partnerships as progress—because the scale of the challenges we face requires us to rely on each other in new and more powerful ways. Our success depends on our students, staff, faculty, alumni, friends and partners—each of whom contributes their own ideas, energy and commitment to what comes next. Together, we will continue to build on a strong foundation that has endured for generations. We will adapt and evolve as new opportunities emerge. And we will redefine what it means to be a world-class college of engineering in a rapidly changing world. Engineering has always been about shaping the future. Now more than ever, it is time to engineer what’s next.
