Suzy Wu
Engineering undergraduate Suzy Wu is the recipient of the inaugural Jennifer L. Reed Memorial Undergraduate Research Award from the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Wu is currently conducting research in the lab of Conway Assistant Professor Matt Gebbie.
The $1,500 award is provided to support chemical and biological undergraduate students in new or continuing research projects. It was created to honor Professor Jennifer Reed, a CBE faculty member who passed away in July 2020.
Professor Reed believed strongly in providing opportunities for undergraduates to participate in research activities, believing it helps them gain confidence in their abilities, develops new skills and contributes in meaningful ways to academic research. The award was established by her family and friends to honor her accomplishments and her dedication to students.
“I am more than honored to carry on Professor Reed’s spirit and continue on research with Professor Gebbie’s group,” says Wu. “I know this is a great recognition, and I am excited to contribute more next spring.”
Gebbie says that Wu is an excellent choice for the award. “I am delighted that Suzy decided to join our team. From our first meeting, Suzy has stood out with her combination of curiosity, enthusiasm and ability to ask deep questions. Suzy’s independence is enabling her to begin to explore new ideas that could open complementary directions in our group,” he says. “I am excited to see Suzy earn well-deserved recognition and resources to support her studies. I have utmost confidence that Suzy is going to be a future leader, no matter which direction she decides to pursue as the next step of her career.”
