A student-led project on RFID reflectors for pedestrians and cyclists was selected as one of the top three entries to the 2018 IEEE Educational Mega Challenge. Yuchen Gu, an undergraduate in electrical and computer engineering, will also receive an all-expense-paid trip to Orlando to present the project in person at the 12th annual IEEE International Conference on RFID for the final round of evaluation. The challenge asked teams to identify a specific city with a problem that could be amenable to smart city solutions, and then devise a means to improve conditions using RFID technology. Gu spearheaded the effort under the mentorship of Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Daniel van der Weide and Marcos Martinez, a postdoctoral researcher.
