Eight engineering students receive NSF Graduate Research Fellowships

Seven graduate students and one undergraduate from the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering have landed prestigious National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowships.

The 2020 recipients are:

• Jonathon Blank, a graduate student in mechanical engineering
• Tianen Chen, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering
• Sophie Mancha, a graduate student in biomedical engineering
• Rahul Parhi, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering
• Rebecca Roembke, a graduate student in mechanical engineering
• Trevor Seets, a graduate student in electrical and computer engineering
• Paul Slaughter, an undergraduate student in mechanical engineering
• Madeline Smerchansky, a graduate student in biomedical engineering

The NSF Graduate Research Fellowship Program dates to 1952 and supports emerging scholars in STEM fields with a three-year stipend, additional financial aid, and research and professional development opportunities.

In addition, four graduate students and one undergraduate earned honorable mention. They are:

• Lesley Arant, a graduate student in biomedical engineering
• Sara Harper, a graduate student in biomedical engineering
• Richard Hommel, a graduate student in chemical and biological engineering
• Patrick Kasl, an undergraduate in biomedical engineering
• Michael Patton, a graduate student in materials science and engineering
